Most NATO vehicles with the 5063-5393 engine have been upgraded to the 5063-539L which has a glow plug cold start system.

An upgrade kit is available for the 5063-5393 engine to upgrade it with glow plugs.

The 5063-5393 engine is a six-cylinder V6 configuration two-stroke turbocharged diesel engine with 53cid (Cubic Inch Displacement) per cylinder, Model 6V53T. This 6V53T engine has a total displacement of 318 cubic inches and can produce up to 275 brake horsepower.

The 6V53T engine is used in the M113A3 Family of the M113 Armored Vehicle Family. The 5063-5393 engine was developed to provide the required increased power for the M113A3 series of vehicles first developed for the US Army by BAE Systems and then for the M113A3 series of vehicles. The two-stroke diesel has a maximum speed of 2850 RPM and a small, light package compared to its maximum torque rating.
