The official format of the NATO Stock Number (NSN) is thirteen (13) alphanumeric characters without punctuation such as dashes, eg. XXXXXXXXXXXXX. For readability, NSNs are often written in four segments separated by dashes, XXXX-XX-XXX-XXXX. The first segment XXXX is the NATO Supply Class (NSC) of which the first two characters are the NATO Supply Group (NSG). The second segment XX is the National Codification Bureau that codified the NSN, for example 01 for USA, 99 for UK or 14 for France. The third and fourth segments XXX-XXXX are the unique identification number of the item with its NCB. The NCB and unique identification number, XX-XXX-XXXX, form the NATO Identification Number (NIIN) which is unique for any item in the NATO Catalog.
